Norton's wonderful, FREEWARE, utility for encrypting files. Works with all file formats. - Freeware. More Info
File Compression
- PKZip for Windows
PKWare's classic zipping utility, now in 32bit. Though I've tested quite a few zipping utilities, I always return to PKZip. It's power, familiarity, speed and ease of use are all I need - Shareware ($49.00 US). More Info
- TurboZIP
TurboZIP is another quick zipping utility, though not as compact as PKZip. Also available in French, German and Japanese versions - Shareware ($49.00 US). More Info
- Wallaby95
Had to include this friendly little utility. I liked their interface, but all things considered, still went back to PKZip. Probably as complete a file compression utility as there is - Shareware ($24.95 US). More Info
- Win Zip 6.3
I included Win Zip only because it is presently the most popular, probably due to their slam-marketing techniques, file compression utility. Slow for my purposes, I find their interface very clunky and mysterious, but to each his/her own - Shareware ($29.00 US).
C/Net's Download.com has a pretty thorough listing of file compression utilities. If you cannot find what you want among the programs I've tested, click here. When Download.Com's page loads, click File Compression to check out their listings.
File Splitters
File splitters are useful for sending large files across the net in manageable pieces or splitting up on floppies when zip spanning does not yield much compression - what is the use of adding another step in the process. Again I only list one because Part It is all I've ever needed. There are probably better file splitters out there, but I haven't had the time to test them.
- Part It
Simple, useful utility for partioning large files across multiple diskettes - Shareware ($19.00 US). More Info
